The Ragdoll cat originated in Riverside, California, in the 1960s. Ann Baker, a Persian cat breeder, is credited with developing the breed. The foundation cat of the Ragdoll breed was a domestic long-haired white cat named Josephine, believed to be a mix of Angora and Persian. Josephine's kittens were noted for their unique temperament, as they became remarkably relaxed and docile when handled, inspiring the name "Ragdoll."

Baker selectively bred Josephine's offspring with other cats that exhibited similar traits, focusing on their calm demeanor, striking blue eyes, and luxurious, semi-long fur. She also emphasized their large size and affectionate nature, making them ideal companion animals. Baker trademarked the Ragdoll name and initially maintained strict control over the breed's development, which caused some controversy in the cat breeding community.

Over time, other breeders refined the Ragdoll breed, standardizing its physical traits and temperament. Today, Ragdolls are recognized by major cat registries, including The International Cat Association (TICA) and the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA). They are known for their striking color patterns, such as colorpoint, mitted, and bicolor, as well as their friendly, laid-back personalities. Ragdolls remain one of the most popular and beloved cat breeds worldwide.

While Ragdolls are generally healthy cats, they are prone to certain conditions. One of the more well-known genetic diseases is HCM, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. We test all of our breeding cats for all known diseases, and make sure they are fully clear before breeding. As with all breeds, keeping them at a good body condition score is important. As Ragdolls are a larger breed, your vet may think they are overweight. If you are in doubt, contact your breeder.

Health Concerns

If you are not a fan of grooming, then the Ragdoll might not be the right choice for you. This soft, long haired breed requires regular brushing. Ragdolls have a singular coat, which makes them very soft, but it can also matt easily. To stay on top of the shedding, it's a good idea to brush at least twice a week.

Grooming Requirements

Thanks to their gentle and easy-going nature, ragdolls are typically a good fit with children and other pets, especially when introduced at a young age and socialised properly. They’re great family cats that enjoy playtime, but they’re not overly active or demanding.

Socialisation

Whether you live in a tiny studio or a big house, ragdolls fit right in. They don’t need much room to run around and play, making them perfect for living indoors. Ragdolls are not street-smart, and can not survive out on the streets as some cats may be able to. They are safest and happiest indoors being a companion.
